Reliable Material Test Report Services

Alloy Verification Services

When the exact type or grade of a metal is uncertain, documentation alone may not provide the answer. Welding & Joining Management Group® (WJMG) provides metals testing and alloy analysis to help identify material composition and support Material Test Report requirements.

We can analyze small metal samples and prepare drill cuttings, filings, and metal shavings for testing using an electric arc furnace. This gives clients another option when a traditional test specimen is not readily available.

What Is a Material Test Report?

A Material Test Report, commonly called an MTR, is a document containing information about a specific metal or production batch. Depending on the material and specification, the report may include the material grade, chemical composition, heat or lot identification, mechanical properties, applicable specifications, and test results.

Material Test Reports are commonly used to support material traceability and confirm that supplied metals meet specified requirements.

When original documentation is unavailable, incomplete, or needs additional verification, laboratory testing can help provide important information about the material itself.

Material Identification and Alloy Analysis

WJMG can perform metals testing to help determine the type or grade of a material.

Chemical composition is especially important because metals that appear nearly identical can contain different combinations of alloying elements. Identifying those elements can help determine whether a sample is consistent with an expected alloy or material specification.

Testing may be useful when:

  • Original Material Test Reports are unavailable
  • Material markings are missing or unclear
  • An alloy needs to be identified
  • Existing documentation requires additional verification
  • A small or irregular sample must be analyzed
  • Material identity is relevant to a fabrication or failure investigation

The required testing approach depends on the material, available sample, and information the client needs.

Electric Arc Furnace Sample Preparation

One of WJMG’s useful capabilities is its electric arc furnace for preparing small quantities of material for analysis.

Not every project arrives with a convenient piece of solid metal. Sometimes only drill cuttings, filings, metal shavings, or other small samples are available.

WJMG can melt suitable small samples in the electric arc furnace to create a specimen that can then be used for rapid alloy analysis.

This capability expands the types of samples that can be evaluated and can be particularly useful when removing a conventional test coupon is impractical.

What Information Can Material Testing Provide?

The information available depends on the testing requested.

Chemical analysis can help identify the elemental composition of a metal and provide data useful for determining its alloy or grade. Additional mechanical testing may be appropriate when information about strength, hardness, toughness, or other properties is required.

WJMG’s broader laboratory capabilities include:

  • Chemical analysis
  • Tensile testing
  • Hardness testing
  • Charpy impact testing
  • Bend testing
  • Microscopy
  • Metallurgical examination

These services can be coordinated when a project requires more information than alloy identification alone.

Material Test Reports and Material Traceability

A manufacturer’s original Material Test Report commonly includes identifying information such as the alloy, heat number, specification, size, condition, chemistry, and applicable mechanical properties.

That information helps connect the documented test results to a particular batch of material.

Laboratory analysis of an unknown sample serves a different purpose. It can provide measured information about the material being examined, but it does not recreate the original mill production history or heat-number traceability when those records have been lost.

Understanding that distinction helps clients select the right testing approach for their project.

Why Choose WJMG for Material Testing?

WJMG combines metals testing with experience in welding, metallurgy, mechanical testing, and chemical analysis.

Our ability to work with conventional specimens as well as small samples prepared with an electric arc furnace gives clients flexibility when determining material type or grade.

Rather than applying the same process to every sample, we can help determine which laboratory method is appropriate based on the material and information needed.
