Heat Treatment

Heat Treatment
Precision Heat Treatment Services
Welds and Metal Components
Welding & Joining Management Group® (WJMG) provides heat treatment services for welded assemblies, metal parts, and components that require controlled heating and cooling. Our facility supports annealing, normalizing, stress relieving, tempering, hydrogen bake-out, and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT).
With multiple furnace sizes, portable induction heating, programmable temperature control, and in-house metals testing, WJMG can support both routine and specialized heat treatment requirements.
Heat Treatment Services Available at WJMG
Different materials and applications require different thermal processes. WJMG offers several treatment services depending on the desired result and project requirements.
Our capabilities include:
- Annealing
- Normalizing
- Stress relieving
- Post-weld heat treatment
- Tempering
- Hydrogen bake-out
- Portable induction heating
- Meta-Lax vibratory stress relief and weld conditioning
The correct process depends on the material, component geometry, welding history, and intended outcome.

Post-Weld Heat Treatment for Welded Components
If you are searching for post treatment welding, the industry term is typically post-weld heat treatment, or PWHT.
PWHT is a controlled heating process performed after welding. Depending on the material and application, it may be used to reduce residual stresses, temper hardened areas, or support required metallurgical properties.
Temperature, heating rate, hold time, and cooling rate all matter during PWHT. Superheat notes that improper heat treatment can negatively affect properties such as tensile strength, toughness, and corrosion performance, which is why controlled temperature ranges are important.
WJMG uses programmable equipment and chart recorders to monitor ramp-up, hold, and ramp-down cycles during applicable treatment processes.
Heat Treatment Equipment and Temperature Capabilities
WJMG has several options for components of different sizes and temperature requirements:
- Lindberg Heat Treat Furnace: (3′ × 3′ × 3′) up to 1,400°F
- WJMG Heat Treat Furnace: (5′ × 5′ × 16′) up to 1,600°F
- Skutt Heat Treat Furnace: (2′ × 2′ × 6′) up to 2,400°F
- Shop Heat Treat Furnace: (2′ × 2′ × 2′) up to 2,400°F
- Portable Induction Heating Coil: Adjustable sizing, up to 2,400°F
- Meta-Lax: Vibratory stress relief and weld conditioning
These options allow WJMG to select equipment based on part size, required temperature, and process needs.

Annealing, Normalizing, and Stress Relief
WJMG’s treatment services extend beyond PWHT.
Annealing can be used to alter material condition and reduce hardness for applicable metals. Normalizing involves heating and controlled cooling to produce a more uniform microstructure, while stress relieving is used to reduce internal stresses that may remain after welding, forming, or fabrication.
Competitors such as Precision Thermal Processing also identify annealing, normalizing, and stress relieving as core thermal-processing methods used across industrial applications.
WJMG can help determine which thermal process best matches the project requirements.
Hydrogen Bake-Out
Hydrogen bake-out may be used following welding when reducing diffusible hydrogen is part of the required process.
Controlled heating allows hydrogen to diffuse from the affected material before it contributes to hydrogen-related cracking. This process is distinct from PWHT and may be performed at a different stage after welding.
WJMG includes hydrogen bake-out among its available treatment capabilities.
Metals Testing After Heat Treatment
One advantage of working with WJMG is the ability to coordinate treatment services with additional metals testing.
After treatment, WJMG can perform evaluations such as:
- Hardness testing
- Tensile testing
- Chemical analysis
- Other mechanical or metallurgical testing as required
This allows clients to combine thermal processing and material evaluation within the same laboratory when verification is needed.

Why Choose WJMG for Heat Treatment Services?
WJMG combines thermal-processing equipment with experience in welding, metallurgy, and mechanical testing.
Our range of furnaces and portable induction equipment allows us to support components with different dimensions and temperature requirements, while programmable controls help manage heating, hold time, and cooling.
For projects involving post-weld heat treatment, annealing, normalizing, tempering, hydrogen bake-out, or stress relief, WJMG can coordinate the thermal process with additional testing when needed.
